Call for Papers "Gender in the Workplace"
Workshop of the Research Training Group “Regional Disparities and Economic Policy” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)

eGender differences in the workplace – for example, in pay, employment, career progression, or mobility – have become an important area of research in economics. This workshop aims to bring together scholars working at the frontier of gender economics. We invite submissions on topics including, but not limited to:
- Causes and consequences of gender pay gaps
- Working time, scheduling, and labor supply decisions
- Gender gaps in geographic mobility and spatial frictions
- The role of local labor market conditions for gender gaps
- Sexual harassment in the workplace
- Career progression and leadership
- Career costs of care responsibilities and family policy
Workshop Details
The workshop will start on Thursday, April 15, at 1pm and will end on Friday, April 16, at 3pm. Accommodation and meals will be arranged at the workshop site and covered by the Research Training Group. Participants are expected to cover their own travel expenses. In addition to invited keynote lectures and regular paper presentations, the workshop will include a one-hour flash-talk session.
The workshop will bring together early-career researchers and more senior economists. Submissions from PhD students and post-docs are particularly encouraged.
Submission
Please complete the submission form and upload your research paper or extended abstract (1,000–1,500 words) by December 1, 2026.
Venue
The workshop will take place at the Zeche Zollverein, the old Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, Germany.
At the conclusion of the workshop on Friday, April 16, participants are invited to join a guided tour of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex beginning at 3.30pm. Once one of the largest coal mines in Europe, Zollverein is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a landmark of the Ruhr region’s transformation from an industrial center to a hub of culture and education.
