DFG funds new project on gender gaps in economics
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has awarded €333,699 to support a new research project investigating persistent gender disparities in academic economics. The three-year project, led by Martin Karlsson with co-applicant Kristina Strohmaier, aims to understand how gender differences in collaboration, publication, and recognition shape the careers of economists in German-speaking countries.
The study will compile a unique linked dataset combining survey responses, biographical information, and bibliometric data for academic economists across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Key objectives include examining the decision-making behind co-authorship, analyzing gendered networking patterns and publication output, and studying citation patterns to evaluate recognition differences. The project is expected to shed light on structural and cultural mechanisms contributing to female disadvantage in the economics profession and provide evidence-based recommendations to foster greater gender equality.
